Electromechanical Degree Apprenticeship with Aeristech and The University of Warwick

We are welcoming applications for our Degree Apprenticeship scheme in partnership with The University of Warwick.

Who we are:

Based in Leamington Spa, Aeristech is a small, but fast-moving, high-technology R&D company, developing and manufacturing air compressors with high power, high speed, permanent magnet electric motors and the electronic drive units to power them. The air compressors are primarily used in hydrogen fuel cell drive trains for automotive and aerospace applications.

How long is the apprenticeship for / when does it start and what is the future prospect?

The apprenticeship is for 5 years – starting September 2024. There is an opportunity to apply for a full-time position after successful completion of the apprenticeship.

What is the role?

The Degree Apprentice Electromechanical Engineer will work within the Engineering team in a variety of disciplines, which will be tailored to complement the degree course content. They will help to design, build, and test high speed air compressors and electronic drive units, including developing new ideas and products.

The below list is not exhaustive.

  • Follow the Degree Apprenticeship Programme, including attendance at Warwick University for academic study.
  • Continue professional development through reviews with your mentor.
  • Work closely with engineers from different disciplines (mechanical, electronic and software engineering) to learn and contribute to all aspects of the design process.
  • Understand and appreciate the requirements of the different disciplines and the relationships between them: as part of a small R&D company it is beneficial to be able to work in this way rather than to focus solely on one area.
  • Join project teams to develop products, perform design verification testing and troubleshooting while learning from more experienced members of the teams.
  • Take responsibility for aspects of design or testing.
  • Design and test high voltage power electronics to drive the motor using state-of-the-art semiconductor power switching devices.
  • Design and test low voltage circuits for motor control, sensor feedback and fault protection.
  • Design, build and test Printed Circuit Boards.
  • Design and test electronics to comply with Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) and other international standards.
  • Perform analysis of electronic circuits, including simulations and power loss calculations of the power semiconductors.
  • Write software to control the power electronics and motor in C and MATLAB/Simulink. This will involve advanced algorithms such as Space Vector Modulation and Field-Oriented Control.
  • Design mechanical parts and assemblies using 3D CAD (Solidworks).
  • Perform Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to determine the performance of products under shock and vibration.
  • Simulate motor electromechanical designs and develop new designs by selecting the rotor and stator parameters.
  • Build and test new motor designs.
  • Understand the operation of foil air bearings for high-speed motors.
  • Understand centrifugal compressor operation and how the design of the compressor wheel and volute affect the pressure ratio, air flow rate and efficiency.
  • Perform rotor dynamic simulations to understand the vibrational characteristics of the motor.
  • Design and test cooling systems including Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations to achieve the best cooling performance of motor and power electronics.
  • Build and test sub-assemblies and finished products of the air compressor and drive electronics.
  • Perform testing at off-site locations.
  • Learn and develop processes and create documentation.
  • Understand customer requirements and work with customers to troubleshoot issues.

What is the salary and work schedule?

£22,000 per year, increasing by £1,000 every year upon attaining satisfactory performance in academic assessments and in the workplace.

You will work 37.5 hours a week – Monday to Friday – with some flexibility regarding working pattern.

What skills and qualifications are required?

The ideal candidate would have an analytical, inquiring mind, a desire to learn and understand how things work, and a passion for creating things.

You will possess either:

  • AAA grades at A level, to include Mathematics and a Physical Science
  • BTEC Diploma grade D*D*, with an A grade A level Mathematics
  • BTEC Extended Diploma grade DDD, including two Mathematics units

All subject to passing a maths assessment.
